The mutual intelligibility of Swedish and Danish in tourist interactions outside of Scandinavia

The continental Scandinavian languages are very closely related and this fact often leads to the presumption that their speakers are able to communicate with each other without using another language (e.g. English); this type of communication is called semicommunication (this term firstly used Haugen in his paper from 1966). Although there are many historical, social and linguistic preconditions which favour semicommunication, interactions between Scandinavians can be characterized by frequent misunderstandings. This thesis focuses on semicommunication between Danish and Swedish and it consists of the author's research on Danish-Swedish conversations outside of Scandinavia with both native and non-native speakers of the languages. The research took place in Prague, in a tourist office with Danish owners and Scandinavian clients. It is based on audio recordings of conversations between non-native Swedish speaking employees of the office and Danish tourists. The aim of the research is to find out in which situations and why semicommunication fails, how the possible misunderstandings are solved and whether they create problems for subsequent communication. The bachelor`s thesis Czech of Slovak Speakers analyzes the spoken language speeches by two Slovak speakers in the Czech language on the basis of language transfer, semicommunication and linguistic typology of errors described in the first part. The second part is in relation to the theoretical definition of the problem devoted to the research. It describes and according to the language levels divides errors as actually found in the speeches and imagined, which are described by speakers themselves. The conclusion find out the ratio between the errors caused by interference and by other influences. We explain possible causes of this situation and we are suggesting a solution there.

Czech of Slovak Speakers

Bachelor thesis Czech of Slovak speakers analyzes written texts of two native Slovak speakers in the Czech language on the basis of knowledge of language transfer, semicommunication and typology of linguistic errors. The first part is devoted to theoretical definition of the problem. The second part contains brief biographies of both participants, including the method of acquisition of Czech and its use, and delivers the results of error analysis of texts. Based on the review of the literature and the obtained data categories of errors occurring in Czech of Slovak speakers are created. The thesis provides an overview of anticipated and other errors in the texts of both speakers compared the incidence and description of selected problematic phenomena.
